One of the most common questions we get from our clients is how many keys a piano has. …and, though most of today’s pianos have 88 keys (52 white keys and 36 black keys), it wasn’t always this way. Not only are the bigger keyboards more awkward to move from place to place. But they can weigh a considerable amount more too with the 88 key keyboards. Weighing around 17 pounds (8kg) with 25 key keyboards weighing mostly under 2 pounds (1kg). So if you already have a lot of equipment, adding a large keyboard to the party may be something you regret. In total there are 52 white keys and 36 black keys to play sharp and flat notes. Between this introduction in the 1800s and the 70’s, when keyboards really started to grow, the 88-key design is pretty much all that was available. If your family has a piano as an heirloom, it is likely to be 88-keys in size. A standard piano has 88 keys, of which 52 are white and 36 black, ranging across more than seven octaves. In recent decades, electronic keyboards have been developed that mimic the piano keyboard and sound. These keyboards have developed into a category of instruments all their own. There are pianos out there – not just keyboards – that have less than the standard 88 keys. You might wonder whether or not a piano from an era with 85 keys would be a good choice for you or if you should avoid pianos with less than 88 keys. And if you’re keyboard shopping, you probably are wondering: “Do I need 88 keys to learn piano?” When you think of a piano, you’re probably thinking of an acoustic one: the kind built of wood, heavy and often in need of tuning. They come in many shapes, sizes and even colors , but they all have the same number of keys: 88. Steinway created the 88-key piano. In the late 1880s, piano manufacturer Steinway created the 88-key piano. Other manufacturers followed suit, and Steinway’s model has been the standard ever since. An 88-key piano has seven octaves plus three lower notes (B, B flat and A) below the bottom C.
